What are the actual ingredients of Heantos?

There are 13 different plants and herbs in the Heantos4 formula. Most of them can be found widely, but there are some herbs and plants that are indigenous to Vietnam.

Radix Codonopsis – Bonnet Bellflower, Dangshen, Dang Shen, poor man's ginseng.

Gelatinum asini – E Jiao. Gelatin glue made of the hide of Equus Asinus L. donkey.

Ophiopogon japonicus – Mondo grass, Fountain plant, monkey grass; Mai Men Dong, “dragon's beard” or “snake's beard”.

Astragalus membranaceus – Huang Qi, “yellow senior”.

Glycyrrhiza uralensis – Chinese licorice, Gan Cao.

Angelica sinensis – Dong quai, Chinese angelica root, tong-kui, tang kuei, “female ginseng”.

Rehmannia glutinosa – Chinese foxglove, Sheng Di Huang, “Fresh Earth Yellow”.

Stephania – Aristolochia fangchi, Fang Ji, Guang Fang Ji, Mu Fang Ji.

The History

For hundreds of years, the people of Vietnam have used opium as a sedative and cure-all, and addiction, especially in rural areas, is common. After every harvest, the elders have been able to continue using opium, but the younger opium users eventually run out and have had to get clean until the opium is plentiful again. Simpler versions of Heantos have been always used in these villages to make withdrawals more comfortable.

Heantos was first concocted in the 1980’s in a lab as a potent tea by Dr. Tran Khuong Dan, one of Vietnam's foremost herbalists, whose father and brother died hopelessly addicted to opiates. Mr. Dan, pronounced Zen, set out to find a cure for addiction using traditional, natural ingredients. He traveled the length and breadth of his country, where many people still swear by herbal cures over more modern medicines. He conferred with the local herbalists and healers, culling secret homemade remedies used for addiction treatment for ages. He scoured traditional Chinese and modern medical texts to learn as much as he could about addiction and methods of treatment. Then, he made himself dependent first on opium, and then on heroin. After six months of intensive trials using his own body as a research laboratory, he developed a new traditional medicine remedy from extractions of thirteen plants and herbs. And when he broke his addiction, he knew he had succeeded in his quest. It was given the name of Heantos - a play on the words "heat of the sun”, from an ancient Greek word meaning “health-giving plants”.

Starting in 1995, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) cooperated with Dan's group for scientific developments of Heantos. The ingredients were isolated into three components, and refined by chemists to be most effective for each of the effects of withdrawals off of opiates. Now, through the improvement of the extraction method and the standardization of the composition of ingredients, these three components, called Heantos 1, 2, and 3, are now produced as hard capsules at 0.5 grams each. This is what is now referred to as "Heantos 4" or more simply, HEANTOS.

Weren’t there a few Heantos deaths in the 1990’s?

The truth of those cases is unclear, but not to worry, that all happened well before the scientific development of Heantos4 pills. Those few cases involved the unregulated doses of Heantos syrup, not pills.

How do we know Heantos is safe and effective?

During almost 20 years of research on Heantos, the Vietnam Institute of Chemistry has cooperated with international scientific institutions in the clarification of Heantos toxicology, chemistry, and mechanisms of action. Clinical studies of Heantos by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) with the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Johns Hopkins University, the Leibniz Institute of Plant Biochemistry and the University of Essen in Germany, have proven its safety and effectiveness as a gentle addiction detoxification. Studies are finding that Heantos shows no abuse potential and significantly ameliorates withdrawals from opiates, most compellingly, addressing naloxone-precipitated withdrawal symptoms in morphine-treated subjects.

In Vietnam, the clinical study in phases I, II, and III, were carried out by the Central Psychiatric Hospital in Hanoi under supervision of the Vietnam Ministry of Health. It was finalized in 2011 with good results. In 2012, the Vietnamese Drug Administration officially issued permission for the production and use of Heantos4.

The use of Heantos4 in many drug addiction treatment centers in Vietnam is showing that Heantos4 is effective in helping patients to sleep through eased withdrawal symptoms, and wake to cravings significantly reduced. With no unwanted side effects observed, Heantos4 is now used for treatment of drug addiction across Vietnam. A recidivism study in a treatment center in Hoa Binh showed that 300 patients (92.5%) were still drug-free three months after Heantos detoxification. The Vietnamese government reports that since 1991, over 9,000 heroin, opium, and cocaine addicts have been successfully treated with Heantos4. It has been proven to be completely nontoxic and non-addictive. It doesn’t affect heart rate, blood pressure, the heart, or liver. It has no side effects. Finally, we have a solution that is completely safe.
